- Abstract: Open quantum and wave systems exhibit exotic degeneracies at exceptional
points in parameter space that have attracted considerable attention in various
fields of physics, including optics and photonics. One reason is the strong
response of open systems at such degeneracies to external perturbations and
excitations. We introduce two characteristics of exceptional points that
quantify the response in terms of energy eigenvalues and eigenstates,
intensity, and dynamics. The concept is verified for several physically
relevant examples. This work provides a new perspective on the physics of
exceptional points.

Phenomena associated with exceptional points (EPs) have been extensively studied in relation to superconducting circuits.
We consider a monitored three level system and find multiple EPs in the Lindbladian eigenvalues considered as functions of a counting field.
We identify dynamical observables affected by these transitions and demonstrate how the underlying topology can be recovered from experimentally measured quantum jump distributions.

Theory in physics can provide a kind of map of the physical system under investigation, showing all of the possible types of behavior which may occur.
Certain points on the map are of greater significance than others, because they describe how the system responds in a useful or interesting manner.
We consider a paradigmatic model: a pair of coupled qubits subjected to an unbalanced ratio of gain and loss.
In particular, we uncover the points responsible for characteristic spectral features and for the sudden loss of quantum entanglement in the steady state.

We consider the nature of exceptional points arising in quantum systems described within an open quantum systems approach.
In particular, we discuss how the populations, correlations, squeezed quadratures and optical spectra crucially depend on being above or below the exceptional point.
Our results invite the experimental probing of quantum resonators under two-photon driving.

We introduce the concept of the distance of a given exceptional point in matrix space to the set of diabolic points.
We prove that this distance determines an upper bound for the response strength of a non-Hermitian system with this exceptional point.
This finding has profound consequences for physical realizations of exceptional points that rely on perturbing a diabolic point.
