- Abstract: The measurement of quantum states is one of the most important problems in
quantum mechanics. We introduce a quantum state tomography technique in which
the state of a qubit is reconstructed, while the qubit remains undetected. The
key ingredients are: (i) employing an additional qubit, (ii) aligning the
undetected qubit with a known reference state by using path identity, and (iii)
measuring the additional qubit to reconstruct the undetected qubit state. We
theoretically establish and experimentally demonstrate the method with photonic
polarization states. The principle underlying our method could also be applied
to quantum entities other than photons.

We study the identification of quantum phases of matter, at zero temperature, when only part of the phase diagram is known in advance.
We show how to use our previous knowledge to construct an observable capable of classifying the phase even in the unknown region.
An important application of our findings is the classification of the phases of matter obtained in quantum simulators.

We use variational quantum circuits to disentangle the quantum state to a product of computational zero states.
Inverse evolution of the zero states reconstructs the quantum state up to an overall phase.
Our method is universal and imposes no specific ansatz or constrain on the quantum state.

Reconstruction of quantum states from experimental measurements is crucial for the verification and benchmarking of quantum devices.
Many physical quantum states, such as states generated by noisy, intermediate-scale quantum computers, are usually structured.
We establish theoretical guarantees for the stable recovery of MPOs using tools from compressive sensing and the theory of empirical processes.

A core principle of quantum theory is that non-orthogonal quantum states cannot be perfectly distinguished with single-shot measurements.
Here we implement a quantum state elimination measurement which unambiguously rules out two of four pure, non-orthogonal quantum states.
