- Abstract: Thermal excitations of finite quantum systems are interesting due to the
absent of phase transitions and the breakdown of the BCS theory. In this work,
we study the pairing hamiltonian with four particles at finite temperatures on
a quantum simulator and a superconducting quantum computer. The excited states
are obtained by the variational quantum deflation (VQD). The error-mitigation
methods are applied to improve the noisy results. The simulation of thermal
excitations is performed with the same circuits at zero temperature, which
shows a smooth transition as a function of temperatures in contrast to a false
phase transition by the finite-temperature BCS (FT-BCS) method.

Quantum phase transitions occur when quantum fluctuation destroys order at zero temperature.
With an increase in temperature, normally the thermal fluctuation wipes out any signs of this transition.
