- Title: Single photon optical bistability
- Authors: Igor E. Protsenko, Alexander V. Uskov
- Abstract summary: We investigate the bistability in a small Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with the optical wavelength size cavity, the nonlinear Kerr medium and only a few photons, on average, excited by the external quantum field.
Multiple stationary states of the FPI cavity field with different spectra are possible at realistic conditions, for example, in the FPI with the photonic crystal cavity and the semiconductor-doped glass nonlinear medium.

- Abstract: We investigate the bistability in a small Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI)
with the optical wavelength size cavity, the nonlinear Kerr medium and only a
few photons, on average, excited by the external quantum field. Analytical
expressions for the stationary mean photon number, the bistability domain, the
field and the photon number fluctuation spectra are obtained. Multiple
stationary states of the FPI cavity field with different spectra are possible
at realistic conditions, for example, in the FPI with the photonic crystal
cavity and the semiconductor-doped glass nonlinear medium.

We have experimentally performed the single-site optical spectroscopy and optical addressing of a single rare-earth atom in an amorphous silica optical fiber at room temperature.
The ability to address single RE atoms at room temperature provides a very stable and cost-effective technical platform for the realization of a solid-state system for a large-scale quantum optical network.

In the single- or few-photon regime treating the empty microcavity as an optical filter does not capture the full effect on the quantum state of the transmitted photons.
We find that propagation through a strongly coupled microcavity above a certain coupling threshold enhances the entanglement entropy between the signal and idler photons.

We introduce a single-photon detector design operating in the microwave domain based on a weakly nonlinear metamaterial.
We show that the single-photon detection fidelity increases with the length of the metamaterial to approach one at experimentally realistic lengths.
In stark contrast to conventional photon detectors operating in the optical domain, the photon is not destroyed by the detection and the photon wavepacket is minimally disturbed.
