- Abstract summary: Active states are an important resource for quantum thermodynamics in the absence of heat baths.
We establish a resource theory that captures the operational scenario where an experimenter manipulates a quantum system by means of energy-preserving operations and resets to non-active states.

- Abstract: Active states, from which work can be extracted by time-dependent
perturbations, are an important resource for quantum thermodynamics in the
absence of heat baths. Here we characterize this resource, establishing a
resource theory that captures the operational scenario where an experimenter
manipulates a quantum system by means of energy-preserving operations and
resets to non-active states. Our resource theory comes with simple conditions
for state convertibility and an experimentally accessible resource quantifier
that determines the maximum advantage of active states in the task of producing
approximations of the maximally coherent state by means of energy-preserving
quantum operations.

A fundamental question in quantum information theory is whether an analogous second law can be formulated to characterize the convertibility of resources for quantum information processing by a single function.
In 2008, a promising formulation was proposed, linking resource convertibility to the optimal performance of a variant of the quantum version of hypothesis testing.
In 2023, a logical gap was found in the original proof of this lemma, casting doubt on the possibility of such a formulation of the second law.

We prove that the state convertibility for any coherent state is fully characterized by the free energy defined with the quantum relative entropy.
We can extend this result to general resource theories in the form that imposing the covariant condition to a general resource theory does not change the state convertibility.

Consistent Resource Measures [3.8073142980733]
Quantum resource theories (QRTs) provide a unified theoretical framework for understanding inherent quantum-mechanical properties that serve as resources in quantum information processing.
But resources motivated by physics may possess intractable mathematical structure to analyze, such as non-uniqueness of maximally resourceful states, lack of convexity, and infinite dimension.
We investigate state conversion and resource measures in general QRTs under minimal assumptions to figure out universal properties of physically motivated quantum resources.
