- Abstract: In this work we analyze the deep link between the 20th Century positivist
re-foundation of physics and the famous measurement problem of quantum
mechanics. We attempt to show why this is not an "obvious" nor "self evident"
problem for the theory of quanta, but rather a direct consequence of the
empirical-positivist understanding of physical theories when applied to the
orthodox quantum formalism. In contraposition, we discuss a representational
realist account of both physical 'theories' and 'measurement' which goes back
to the works of Einstein, Heisenberg and Pauli. After presenting a critical
analysis of Bohr's definitions of 'measurement' we continue to discuss the way
in which several contemporary approaches to QM --such as decoherence, modal
interpretations and QBism-- remain committed to Bohr's general methodology.
Finally, in order to expose the many inconsistencies present within the
(empirical-positivist) presuppositions responsible for creating the quantum
measurement problem, we show how through these same set of presuppositions it
is easy to derive a completely analogous paradox for the case of classical
mechanics.

We will argue that this new line of research is capable not only to evade the many open problems which appear within the mainstream literature, but is also able to present a consistent and coherent physical understanding of entanglement.

For N. Bohr, the measurement problem is a pseudo-problem because any quantum phenomenon presupposes the classical context of an experimental setup and the use of classical concepts to describe it.
Our approach is consistent with H. Zinkernagels interpretation, according to which Bohr's position is not only anti-fundamentalism, but also ontological anti-fundamentalism.

Quantum measurement is a fundamental concept in the field of quantum mechanics.
Despite its significance, four fundamental issues continue to pose significant challenges to the broader application of quantum measurement.
We employ a new space-time approach to relativistic quantum mechanics to address these issues systematically.

I propose a slight addition to standard textbook quantum mechanics, in the form of two rules, which avoids the paradox.
The first specifies when a given quantum dynamics can be interpreted as a measurement.
The second requires that a joint context be used to determine whether several different dynamical evolutions can all be interpreted as measurement.

We will argue that the reason behind the impossibility to reach a meaningful answer to this question is strictly related to the 20th Century Bohrian-positivist re-foundation of physics.
We will also argue that the possibility of understanding QM is at plain sight, given we return to the original framework of physics in which the meaning of understanding has always been clear.
