- Abstract: Challenges facing the deployment of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems in
critical infrastructure protection applications include the optical loss-key
rate tradeoff, addition of network clients, and interoperability of
vendor-specific QKD hardware. Here, we address these challenges and present
results from a recent field demonstration of three QKD systems on a real-world
electric utility optical fiber network.

Current quantum key distribution (QKD) networks focus almost exclusively on transporting secret keys with the highest possible rate.
This architecture is neither scalable nor cost-effective and future, real-world deployments will differ considerably.
The structure of the MadQCI QKD network presented here is based on disaggregated components and modern paradigms.

It achieves a near-optimal (within 5%) performance in terms of the percentage of served requests.
It is shown to be scalable and maintain its near-optimal performance even when the size of the QCN increases.
