- Title: Radiation pressure on single atoms: generalization of an exact
analytical approach to multilevel atoms
- Authors: L. Podlecki, J. Martin, and T. Bastin
- Abstract summary: We provide a standardized and exact analytical formalism for computing in the semiclassical regime the radiation force experienced by a two-level atom.
Here, we extend this treatment to the multilevel atom case, where degeneracy of the atomic levels is considered and polarization of light enters into play.

- Abstract: In a recent work, we provided a standardized and exact analytical formalism
for computing in the semiclassical regime the radiation force experienced by a
two-level atom interacting with any number of plane waves with arbitrary
intensities, frequencies, phases, and propagation directions [J. Opt. Soc. Am.
B \textbf{35}, 127-132 (2018)]. Here, we extend this treatment to the
multilevel atom case, where degeneracy of the atomic levels is considered and
polarization of light enters into play. A matrix formalism is developed to this
aim.

We consider the optical forces on atoms immersed in general paraxial higher-order Poincar'e optical vector modes.
The coupling to atoms gives rise to wide-ranging scenarios involving such modes in which any specific polarisation is within a spectrum of wave polarisation.
We show that this gives rise to a variety of physical situations, governed by the mode order $m$, the polarisation represented by the angular coordinates of the mode on the surface of the unit Poincar'e sphere.

modes [0.0]
The twisted light modes used in atomic physics experiments can be contaminated by small admixtures of plane wave radiation.
The proposed method is based on the analysis of the magnetic sublevel population of atoms or ions interacting with the "twisted + plane wave" radiation.
We find that even tiny admixtures of plane wave radiation can lead to remarkable variations in the populations of the ground-state magnetic sublevels.

expansion approach [0.0]
Ordered atomic arrays with subwavelength lattice spacing emit light collectively.
For fully inverted atomic arrays, this results in an initial burst of radiation and a fast build up of coherences between the atoms at initial times.
We benchmark the cumulant expansion approach and show that it correctly captures the cooperative dynamics resulting in superradiance.

We consider an ensemble of Alkali atoms that are continuously optically pumped and probed.
Due to the collective scattering of photons at large optical depth, the steady state of atoms does not correspond to an uncorrelated tensor-product state.
We find and characterize regimes of Raman lasing, akin to the model of a superradiant laser.
