- Abstract: The metric field of general relativity is almost fully determined by its
causal structure. Yet, in spin-foam models for quantum gravity, the role played
by the causal structure is still largely unexplored. The goal of this paper is
to clarify how causality is encoded in such models. The quest unveils the
physical meaning of the orientation of the two-complex and its role as a
dynamical variable. We propose a causal version of the EPRL spin-foam model and
discuss the role of the causal structure in the reconstruction of a
semiclassical spacetime geometry.

Causal Representation Learning offers a promising avenue to uncover interpretable causal patterns in simulations.
We introduce Targeted Causal Reduction (TCR), a method for condensing complex intervenable models into a concise set of causal factors.
Its ability to generate interpretable high-level explanations from complex models is demonstrated on toy and mechanical systems.

We study limitations on causal structures and correlations imposed by local quantum theory.
For one, we find a necessary graph theoretic criterion--the "siblings-on-cycles" property--for a causal structure to be admissible.
We show that these causal models, in a restricted setting, are indeed consistent.

We look into the structure of latent space to capture a topological causal ordering of latent factors.
We first show that different causal orderings matter for 3D reconstruction, and then explore several approaches to find a task-dependent causal factor ordering.
Our experiments demonstrate that the latent space structure indeed serves as an implicit regularization and introduces an inductive bias beneficial for reconstruction.

We consider the dynamics of excited local states in massive scalar field theory in an arbitrary spacetime dimension.
We identify different regimes of their evolution depending on the values of the field mass and the quench regularization parameter.
We also investigate the local quenches in massive scalar field theory on a cylinder and show that they cause an erratic and chaotic-like evolution of observables.

Causal modelling is a tool for generating causal explanations of observed correlations.
Existing frameworks for quantum causality tend to focus on acyclic causal structures that are not fine-tuned.
Cyclist causal models can be used to model physical processes involving feedback.
Cyclist causal models may also be relevant in exotic solutions of general relativity.
