- Authors: Xingyu Guo, Jiaxing Zhao, Pengfei Zhuang
- Abstract summary: We study Casimir effect in equilibrium and non-equilibrium photon gas in the frame of quantum kinetic theory for $U(1)$ gauge field.
The Casimir force in vacuum is suppressed by the thermal motion of photons in equilibrium state.
In non-equilibrium state, the photon induced Casimir force oscillates and decays with time and finally disappears.

- Abstract: We study Casimir effect in equilibrium and non-equilibrium photon gas in the
frame of quantum kinetic theory for $U(1)$ gauge field. We derive first the
transport, constraint and gauge fixing equations for the photon number
distribution from Maxwell's equations, and then calculate the energy variation
and Casimir force for a finite system by considering boundary condition on the
surface of the system. The Casimir force in vacuum is suppressed by the thermal
motion of photons in equilibrium state, when considering two adiabatic plates.
In non-equilibrium state, the photon induced Casimir force oscillates and
decays with time and finally disappears.

- Derivation of Casimir Effect without Zeta-Regularization [0.0]
The Casimir effect describes the attractive force arising due to quantum fluctuations of the vacuum electromagnetic field between closely spaced plates.
Traditionally, zeta-regularization is employed in calculations to address infinities that emerge during the derivation.
This paper presents a novel derivation of the Casimir effect that circumvents the need for zeta-regularization.

Quantum mechanics predicts the occurrence of random electromagnetic field fluctuations, or virtual photons, in vacuum.
The exchange of virtual photons between two bodies in relative motion could lead to non-contact quantum vacuum friction or Casimir friction.
We report the first measurement of the non-contact Casimir frictional force between two moving bodies.

The Casimir effect is a quantum phenomenon induced by the zero-point energy of relativistic fields confined in a finite-size system.
We show the typical properties of the Casimir effect for relativistic electron fields in Dirac/Weyl semimetals.
We find an oscillation of the Casimir energy as a function of the thickness of the thin film, which stems from the existence of Dirac/Weyl nodes in momentum space.
