- Title: Postulating the Unicity of the Macroscopic Physical World
- Authors: Mathias Van Den Bossche and Philippe Grangier
- Abstract summary: We argue that the unicity of the macroscopic world is a fundamental postulate of physics, rather than an issue that must be mathematically justified or demonstrated.
This is made possible by using general operator algebras to extend the mathematical description of the physical world towards macroscopic systems.

- Abstract: We argue that a clear view on quantum mechanics is obtained by considering
that the unicity of the macroscopic world is a fundamental postulate of
physics, rather than an issue that must be mathematically justified or
demonstrated. This postulate allows a framework in which quantum mechanics can
be constructed, in a complete mathematically consistent way. This is made
possible by using general operator algebras to extend the mathematical
description of the physical world towards macroscopic systems. Such an approach
goes beyond the usual type I operator algebras used in standard textbook
quantum mechanics. This avoids a major pitfall, which is the temptation to make
the usual type I formalism 'universal'. This may also provide a meta-framework
for both classical and quantum physics, shedding a new light on ancient
conceptual antagonisms, and clarifying the status of quantum objects. Beyond
exploring remote corners of quantum physics, we expect these ideas to be
helpful to better understand and develop quantum technologies.

Experimentalists have demonstrated their ability to control mechanical modes within mesoscopic objects down to the quantum level.
It is now possible to create mechanical Fock states, to entangle mechanical modes from distinct objects, store quantum information or transfer it from one quantum bit to another.
All of this is in particular referred to as a new engineering resource for quantum technologies.

The mathematics/formalism of quantum, compared with classical, physics, may be fairly basically characterized by non-commutative algebras replacing commutative.
One may have the latter only in a haven' of approximately commutative algebras of quasi-classical macroscopic observables', and moreover that yes-no actual world' would plainly be an extra ingredient' to the base quantum theory itself.

We will argue that the reason behind the impossibility to reach a meaningful answer to this question is strictly related to the 20th Century Bohrian-positivist re-foundation of physics.
We will also argue that the possibility of understanding QM is at plain sight, given we return to the original framework of physics in which the meaning of understanding has always been clear.
