- Abstract: The Heisenberg uncertainty relation, which links the uncertainties of the position and momentum of a particle, has an important footprint on the quantum behavior of a physical system. Motivated by this principle, we propose that thermodynamic currents associated with work, heat, and internal energy are described by well-defined Hermitian operators; i.e., we associate physical observables to quantum thermodynamic flows. First, we show that, in principle, it is possible to perform single-point measurements to compute average thermodynamic rates. These rates, or currents, differ from their classical counterparts due to the non-commutativity of the corresponding operators. Using the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation, we then obtain various thermodynamic uncertainty relationships between them. In particular, we connect the fluctuations in heat rate and thermodynamic power with those in internal energy. We further illustrate this approach by applying it to quantum batteries, where we derive an energy-power uncertainty relationship and show how measurements affect the fluctuations.

For classic systems, the fluctuations of a current have a lower bound in terms of the entropy production.
We generalize this idea for quantum systems, where we find a lower bound for the uncertainty of quantum observables given in terms of the quantum relative entropy.
We apply the result to obtain a quantum thermodynamic uncertainty relation in terms of the quantum entropy production, valid for arbitrary dynamics and non-thermal environments.

Thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TURs) represent one of the few broad-based and fundamental relations in our toolbox for tackling the thermodynamics of nonequilibrium systems.

thermodynamic and kinetic uncertainty relations indicate trade-offs between the relative fluctuation of observables and thermodynamic quantities.
We derive finite-time lower bounds on the relative fluctuation of both dynamical observables and their first passage times for arbitrary initial states.
We find that the product of the relative fluctuation and entropy production or dynamical activity is enhanced by quantum coherence in a generic class of dissipative processes of systems with nondegenerate energy levels.
