- Abstract: We show that the dynamics of the Di\'osi-Penrose (DP) model of classical gravity can entangle the mechanical degrees of freedom of two separate particles. For standard experiments of gravitationally induced entanglement (GIE), we find that entanglement can be generated iff the particles are separated by a distance smaller than some limiting value $d_c$, proportional to the only free parameter of the DP model. Greater distances can be achieved through new experimental configurations, where the initial wave-function of the particles is allowed to spread perpendicularly (as opposed to parallely) to the spatial axis separating them. Although the DP dynamics asymptotically drives the system to a separable state, we observe that, for reasonable experimental parameters, GIE can survive for more than a day. In the context of the debate on the nature of gravity, our results prove that experimental demonstrations of GIE are insufficient to conclude that gravity is fundamentally quantum.

A non-entangling version of an arbitrary two-body potential $V(r)$ arises from local measurements and feedback forces.
This produces a non-relativistic model of gravity with fundamental loss of unitarity.
As an alternative to testing entanglement properties, we show that the entire remaining parameter space can be tested by looking for loss of quantum coherence in small systems.
