- Abstract: We report the observation of the controlled expansion of a two-dimensional
quantum gas confined onto a curved shell-shaped surface. We start from the
ellipsoidal geometry of a dressed quadrupole trap and introduce a novel gravity
compensation mechanism enabling to explore the full ellipsoid. The zero-point
energy of the transverse confinement manifests itself by the spontaneous
emergence of an annular shape in the atomic distribution. The experimental
results are compared with the solution of the three-dimensional
Gross-Pitaevskii equation and with a two-dimensional semi-analytical model.
This work evidences how a hidden dimension can affect dramatically the embedded
low-dimensional system by inducing a change of topology.

Adding a one-dimensional optical lattice creates a platform where quantum fluctuations are still unexplored.
We employ Bloch oscillations as an interferometric tool to assess the role quantum fluctuations play in an array of quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates.
Long-lived oscillations are observed when the chemical potential is balanced between sites, in a region where a macrodroplet is extended over several lattice sites.

We compute the geometric phases acquired in both unitary and dissipative Jaynes-Cummings models.
In the dissipative model, the non-unitary effects arise from the outflow of photons through the cavity walls.
We show the geometric phase is robust, exhibiting a vanishing correction under a non-unitary evolution.

We observe a dimension crossing turbulent energy cascade in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a 2d optical lattice.
By exciting atoms into the optical-lattice high bands, the excessive energy is found to cascade from the transverse two-dimensional lattice directions to the continuous dimension.
We expect this observed novel phenomenon of dimension-crossing energy cascade may inspire microscopic theories for modeling positive cosmological constant of our inflationary universe.
